Daily Journals of A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
A Raisin in the Sun is about a lower middle class family,
that goes through many struggles but in the end they are a family. A African
America family is tired of their living conditions, and they wish to move.
However, white folks in their new neighborhood are debating weither they should
move in or not.
This play really showed me that there was some really social issues back in the time the book was written, and how bad people really had it. This poem changed my opinion about the 50's - 60's

Is it important to have dreams and things you hope for? Explain what dreams you have? Page 48
It is important to have dreams so you have something to work forward to.
Some dreams of mine are to make something of myself.
I want to go to college and start my life after high school.

The check is being delivered today, what do you predict mama will do with the money?
Explain why? Page 56
I predict she will put it towards the new house, or to pay for Beneatha’s college tuition.

Everyone experiences conflict.
What is one conflict you are dealing with now?
The fact that I don’t want to grow up and going to be seventeen in less than a
month. I’m sure I will grow up fine though. I think I am afraid of facing the
real world.

Explain how Beneatha cutting her hair is a symbol in the play.
What does it symbolize?
It symbolizes that she wants to go back to her African roots and not be as
Americanized. I think she is starting to like Asagai, not only because he is
from Africa, it’s because he accepts her for her heritage.

Walter uses two metaphors, a volcano and a giant to describe
himself. What is a metaphor that you would use to describe yourself?
Explain why?
A metaphor that I can use is that I am a butterfly, because I go through stages
all the time and always get better because of them.

At the end of Act 2, scene 2, Walter seems to be far away when he tells Travis how
life will be for them in the future. Do you think that he’s is being
unrealistic? Explain why or why not.
-I think he is, because he hasn’t put the steps to get there yet. Walter is always
talking about dreams.

Describe what you think the Younger’s should do. Apply what you
already know about the setting in your response.
-I think they should not move, because they will be unhappyL. They will get
desegregated against by all of the other white people. The Younger’s are very
prideful of what their family has been through and what their ancestors have
been through.

Have you ever felt “outside” of something because of who you are? Explain?
-Yeah. Sometimes I feel that, being so tall is awkward, and
most people are shorter than me. Another thing is that growing up in a
Spanish/black town, I feel that people think I’m rich because I live in Islandia
and that I am white, which doesn’t make sense.

Based on Asagai’s speech to Beneatha, do you think he would side
with Walter? Explain why or why not.
-No I don’t think that Asagai will side with Walter, because Walter thinks that
money is the answer to everything, and you have to have it to pursue your
dreams. Whereas Asagai thinks that you can do anything, with or without money.

“When do you think it is the time to love somebody the
most? When they done good and made things easy for everybody? – Mama.
Explain your answer.
-I disagree, you should love someone through thick and thin, it’s not fair if you
only love them when they make you happy. People need love all the time, not only
when they are in trouble.

“You came up to me and said…Mr. Asagai- I want very much to talk with you. About Africa. You see, Mr. Asagai, I am looking for my identity”- Beneatha
Beneatha goes back to her African roots. I used this picture and quote to show how she started to go back to her roots, by asking him about Africa. After Beneatha went and asked him about Africa she started to change how she looked to show her pride in Africa.
